The city name Gera is the designation of the original section of the Elstertal, where the city is located today. This name probably came into being before the Migration Period and was adopted by the Slavs who had lived there since the 8th century. Gera 1450 was almost completely destroyed in the Saxon Civil War. Gera was largely destroyed by fire in 1686 and 1780. During the Second World War, from May 1944 to April 1945, Gera experienced a total of ten air raids by the American Air Force. The Gera theater venues are the Big House, the Stage at the Park, the Small Theater in the Center and the TheaterFABRIK Gera. The Slavic settlement Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz on a seizure document in 1364. The commercial serving of beer from the Princely Reuss brewery in the lower tavern (today: Goldener Löwe) has been permitted since 1543. In 1948 the Princely Brewery was nationalized.
