Gara originally referred to the section of the Elster valley in which the city is located today. It is assumed that the name Gera originated before the Migration Period. Slavs had lived there since the 8th century and had retained the name. A settlement of the same name arose in the center of the Gera region in the 12th century. This received city rights in the early 13th century (before 1237). In 1882, Oscar Tietz founded the shop with the money from his rich uncle Hermann Tietz, which over the years would develop into one of the most successful department store chains - Hertie. Since April 1945, Gera, like the rest of Thuringia, was occupied by the US Army and from July 2, 1945 by the Soviets. The city became part of the GDR in 1949. In 1952 Gera became the district capital. The Metropol-Kino reopened as a program cinema in November 2014. The Slavic settlement Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz on a deed of attachment from 1364. Köstritz belonged to the Margraviate of Meissen and came to the Reussen in 1364. In 1845 Adolf Sturm set up a bathing establishment. This was significantly expanded in 1865 with the construction of a new spa building and conversion into a public limited company.
