Gara originally referred to the section of the Elster valley in which the city is located today. The name probably originated before the Migration Period and was taken over by the Slavs who had lived there since the 8th century. Since 1564, Gera had been the residence of the younger Reuss line. The importance of the city continued to increase under the sovereign Heinrich Posthumus Reuss. During the Second World War, from May 1944 to April 1945, Gera experienced a total of ten air raids by the American Air Force. The cabaret “Fat nappies” directly under the town hall is well-known beyond the city limits. The Slavic settlement Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz on a seizure document in 1364. A castle probably existed on the Kirchberg since the middle of the 13th century. In 1927, the Thuringian Ministry officially granted Bad Köstritz its town charter.
