The name of the city of Gera originally referred to the section of the Elstertal where the city is located today. It is assumed that the name Gera originated before the Migration Period. Slavs had lived there since the 8th century and had retained the name. The textile industry had gained importance in Gera since the 15th century. The importance of the city continued to increase under the sovereign Heinrich Posthumus Reuss. Gera was one of the centers of the popular uprising on June 17, 1953, which was crushed by the declaration of a state of emergency with the use of Soviet tanks. The cabaret “Fat nappies” directly under the town hall is well-known beyond the city limits. The Slavic settlement Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz on a deed of attachment from 1364. From 1804 the castle park in the Elster-Aue was designed in the style of an English landscape garden. In 1948 the Princely Brewery was nationalized.
