Gara originally referred to the section of the Elster valley in which the city is located today. This name probably came into being before the Migration Period and was adopted by the Slavs who had lived there since the 8th century. Since 1564, Gera had been the residence of the younger Reuss line. In the early days, Gera developed into one of the richest cities in Germany thanks to the textile industry. Since April 1945, Gera, like the rest of Thuringia, was occupied by the US Army and from July 2, 1945 by the Soviets. The city became part of the GDR in 1949. In 1952 Gera became the district capital. The theater stages of the city of Gera merged with the Landestheater Altenburg in 1996 to form the Theater Altenburg-Gera. The Slavic settlement Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz on a deed of attachment from 1364. From 1804 the castle park in the Elster-Aue was designed in the style of an English landscape garden. The town has been called Bad Köstritz since 1926.
