The name of the city of Gera originally referred to the section of the Elstertal where the city is located today. This name probably came into being before the Migration Period and was adopted by the Slavs who had lived there since the 8th century. Gera 1450 was almost completely destroyed in the Saxon Civil War. The importance of the city continued to increase under the sovereign Heinrich Posthumus Reuss. Gera was one of the centers of the popular uprising on June 17, 1953, which was crushed by the declaration of a state of emergency with the use of Soviet tanks. The cabaret “Fat nappies” directly under the town hall is well-known beyond the city limits. Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz, a Slavic settlement, on a deed of attachment in 1364. A castle probably existed on the Kirchberg since the middle of the 13th century. In 1927, the Thuringian Ministry officially granted Bad Köstritz its town charter.
