Gara originally referred to the section of the Elster valley in which the city is located today. It is assumed that the name Gera originated before the Migration Period. Slavs had lived there since the 8th century and had retained the name. Since 1564, Gera had been the residence of the younger Reuss line. The importance of the city continued to increase under the sovereign Heinrich Posthumus Reuss. Gera was one of the centers of the popular uprising on June 17, 1953, which was crushed by the declaration of a state of emergency with the use of Soviet tanks. The theater stages of the city of Gera merged with the Landestheater Altenburg in 1996 to form the Theater Altenburg-Gera. The Slavic settlement Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz on a deed of attachment from 1364. From 1804 the castle park in the Elster-Aue was designed in the style of an English landscape garden. In 1845 Adolf Sturm set up a bathing establishment. This was significantly expanded in 1865 with the construction of a new spa building and conversion into a public limited company.
