Gara originally referred to the section of the Elster valley in which the city is located today. The name Gera probably came into being before the Migration Period. The Slavs, who had been resident since the 8th century, had retained this. The textile industry had gained importance in Gera since the 15th century. In 1882, Oscar Tietz founded the shop with the money from his rich uncle Hermann Tietz, which over the years would develop into one of the most successful department store chains - Hertie. Gera was one of the centers of the popular uprising on June 17, 1953, which was crushed by the declaration of a state of emergency with the use of Soviet tanks. The cabaret “Fat nappies” directly under the town hall is well-known beyond the city limits. The Slavic settlement Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz on a deed of attachment from 1364. From 1804 the castle park in the Elster-Aue was designed in the style of an English landscape garden. The town has been called Bad Köstritz since 1926.
