The city name Gera is the designation of the original section of the Elstertal, where the city is located today. The name probably originated before the Migration Period and was taken over by the Slavs who had lived there since the 8th century. A settlement of the same name arose in the center of the Gera region in the 12th century. This received city rights in the early 13th century (before 1237). The importance of the city continued to increase under the sovereign Heinrich Posthumus Reuss. Gera was one of the centers of the popular uprising on June 17, 1953, which was crushed by the declaration of a state of emergency with the use of Soviet tanks. The cabaret “Fat nappies” directly under the town hall is well-known beyond the city limits. The Slavic settlement Köstritz was first mentioned in a seizure document from 1364 as Kostricz. A castle probably existed on the Kirchberg since the middle of the 13th century. In 1845 Adolf Sturm set up a bathing establishment. This was significantly expanded in 1865 with the construction of a new spa building and conversion into a public limited company.
