The original section of the Elstertal, in which the city is located today, was called Gera. The name Gera probably came into being before the Migration Period. The Slavs, who had been resident since the 8th century, had retained this. A settlement of the same name arose in the center of the Gera region in the 12th century. This received city rights in the early 13th century (before 1237). The importance of the city continued to increase under the sovereign Heinrich Posthumus Reuss. During the Second World War, from May 1944 to April 1945, Gera experienced a total of ten air raids by the American Air Force. The theater stages of the city of Gera merged with the Landestheater Altenburg in 1996 to form the Theater Altenburg-Gera. The Slavic settlement Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz on a deed of attachment from 1364. From 1804 the castle park in the Elster-Aue was designed in the style of an English landscape garden. The town has been called Bad Köstritz since 1926.
