Since April 1945, Gera, like the rest of Thuringia, was occupied by the US Army and from July 2, 1945 by the Soviets. The city became part of the GDR in 1949. In 1952 Gera became the district capital. The theater stages of the city of Gera merged with the Landestheater Altenburg in 1996 to form the Theater Altenburg-Gera. Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz, a Slavic settlement, on a deed of attachment in 1364. The Metropol-Kino reopened as a program cinema in November 2014. A settlement of the same name arose in the center of the Gera region in the 12th century. This received city rights in the early 13th century (before 1237).
