In 1927, the Thuringian Ministry officially granted Bad Köstritz its town charter. Since 1564, Gera had been the residence of the younger Reuss line. The name Gera probably came into being before the Migration Period. The Slavs, who had been resident since the 8th century, had retained this. Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz, a Slavic settlement, on a deed of attachment in 1364. The original section of the Elstertal, in which the city is located today, was called Gera.
