The theater stages of the city of Gera merged with the Landestheater Altenburg in 1996 to form the Theater Altenburg-Gera. Since April 1945, Gera, like the rest of Thuringia, was occupied by the US Army and from July 2, 1945 by the Soviets. The city became part of the GDR in 1949. In 1952 Gera became the district capital. Gera 1450 was almost completely destroyed in the Saxon Civil War. From 1804 the castle park in the Elster-Aue was designed in the style of an English landscape garden. It is assumed that the name Gera originated before the Migration Period. Slavs had lived there since the 8th century and had retained the name.
