The city name Gera is the designation of the original section of the Elstertal, where the city is located today. Gera was largely destroyed by fire in 1686 and 1780. In 1845 Adolf Sturm set up a bathing establishment. This was significantly expanded in 1865 with the construction of a new spa building and conversion into a public limited company. In 1882, Oscar Tietz founded the shop with the money from his rich uncle Hermann Tietz, which over the years would develop into one of the most successful department store chains - Hertie. Since 1564, Gera had been the residence of the younger Reuss line.
