In the early days, Gera developed into one of the richest cities in Germany thanks to the textile industry. In 1882, Oscar Tietz founded the shop with the money from his rich uncle Hermann Tietz, which over the years would develop into one of the most successful department store chains - Hertie. The importance of the city continued to increase under the sovereign Heinrich Posthumus Reuss. The textile industry had gained importance in Gera since the 15th century.
