The name Gera probably came into being before the Migration Period. The Slavs, who had been resident since the 8th century, had retained this. A settlement of the same name arose in the center of the Gera region in the 12th century. This received city rights in the early 13th century (before 1237). Since April 1945, Gera, like the rest of Thuringia, was occupied by the US Army and from July 2, 1945 by the Soviets. The city became part of the GDR in 1949. In 1952 Gera became the district capital. The textile industry had gained importance in Gera since the 15th century.
