Since April 1945, Gera, like the rest of Thuringia, was occupied by the US Army and from July 2, 1945 by the Soviets. The city became part of the GDR in 1949. In 1952 Gera became the district capital. Gera was largely destroyed by fire in 1686 and 1780. The Slavic settlement Köstritz was first mentioned in a seizure document from 1364 as Kostricz. The original section of the Elstertal, in which the city is located today, was called Gera.
