A castle probably existed on the Kirchberg since the middle of the 13th century. This name probably came into being before the Migration Period and was adopted by the Slavs who had lived there since the 8th century. The textile industry had gained importance in Gera since the 15th century. The original section of the Elstertal, in which the city is located today, was called Gera. In the early days, Gera developed into one of the richest cities in Germany thanks to the textile industry.
