Köstritz belonged to the Margraviate of Meissen and came to the Reussen in 1364. Since April 1945, Gera, like the rest of Thuringia, was occupied by the US Army and from July 2, 1945 by the Soviets. The city became part of the GDR in 1949. In 1952 Gera became the district capital. The name Gera probably came into being before the Migration Period.
