Gera was largely destroyed by fire in 1686 and 1780. Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz, a Slavic settlement, on a deed of attachment in 1364. The name probably originated before the Migration Period and was taken over by the Slavs who had lived there since the 8th century. The original section of the Elstertal, in which the city is located today, was called Gera.
