Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz, a Slavic settlement, on a deed of attachment in 1364. The textile industry had gained importance in Gera since the 15th century. The Gera theater venues are the Big House, the Stage at the Park, the Small Theater in the Center and the TheaterFABRIK Gera. The name probably originated before the Migration Period and was taken over by the Slavs who had lived there since the 8th century. Gera was one of the centers of the popular uprising on June 17, 1953, which was crushed by the declaration of a state of emergency with the use of Soviet tanks.
