The Gera theater venues are the Big House, the Stage at the Park, the Small Theater in the Center and the TheaterFABRIK Gera. In the early days, Gera developed into one of the richest cities in Germany thanks to the textile industry. Gera was one of the centers of the popular uprising on June 17, 1953, which was crushed by the declaration of a state of emergency with the use of Soviet tanks. Since 1564, Gera had been the residence of the younger Reuss line. In 1882, Oscar Tietz founded the shop with the money from his rich uncle Hermann Tietz, which over the years would develop into one of the most successful department store chains - Hertie.
