The original section of the Elstertal, in which the city is located today, was called Gera. The name probably originated before the Migration Period and was taken over by the Slavs who had lived there since the 8th century. Gara originally referred to the section of the Elster valley in which the city is located today. Since April 1945, Gera, like the rest of Thuringia, was occupied by the US Army and from July 2, 1945 by the Soviets. The city became part of the GDR in 1949. In 1952 Gera became the district capital. In 1845 Adolf Sturm set up a bathing establishment. This was significantly expanded in 1865 with the construction of a new spa building and conversion into a public limited company.
