Since April 1945, Gera, like the rest of Thuringia, was occupied by the US Army and from July 2, 1945 by the Soviets. The city became part of the GDR in 1949. In 1952 Gera became the district capital. The Slavic settlement Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz on a seizure document in 1364. The city name Gera is the designation of the original section of the Elstertal, where the city is located today. In 1882, Oscar Tietz founded the shop with the money from his rich uncle Hermann Tietz, which over the years would develop into one of the most successful department store chains - Hertie. Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz, a Slavic settlement, on a deed of attachment in 1364.
