The importance of the city continued to increase under the sovereign Heinrich Posthumus Reuss. This name probably came into being before the Migration Period and was adopted by the Slavs who had lived there since the 8th century. Since April 1945, Gera, like the rest of Thuringia, was occupied by the US Army and from July 2, 1945 by the Soviets. The city became part of the GDR in 1949. In 1952 Gera became the district capital. Gara originally referred to the section of the Elster valley in which the city is located today.
