In 1927, the Thuringian Ministry officially granted Bad Köstritz its town charter. Since April 1945, Gera, like the rest of Thuringia, was occupied by the US Army and from July 2, 1945 by the Soviets. The city became part of the GDR in 1949. In 1952 Gera became the district capital. Due to the uranium ore mining near Ronneburg, Gera became a big city in the GDR era and in 1989 reached about 135,000 people, the highest number of inhabitants in its history. Köstritz belonged to the Margraviate of Meissen and came to the Reussen in 1364. The name of the city of Gera originally referred to the section of the Elstertal where the city is located today.
