The Metropol-Kino reopened as a program cinema in November 2014. The name probably originated before the Migration Period and was taken over by the Slavs who had lived there since the 8th century. A castle probably existed on the Kirchberg since the middle of the 13th century. The city name Gera is the designation of the original section of the Elstertal, where the city is located today. Since April 1945, Gera, like the rest of Thuringia, was occupied by the US Army and from July 2, 1945 by the Soviets. The city became part of the GDR in 1949. In 1952 Gera became the district capital.
