The Gera theater venues are the Big House, the Stage at the Park, the Small Theater in the Center and the TheaterFABRIK Gera. The name probably originated before the Migration Period and was taken over by the Slavs who had lived there since the 8th century. Since April 1945, Gera, like the rest of Thuringia, was occupied by the US Army and from July 2, 1945 by the Soviets. The city became part of the GDR in 1949. In 1952 Gera became the district capital. In the early days, Gera developed into one of the richest cities in Germany thanks to the textile industry.
