In the early days, Gera developed into one of the richest cities in Germany thanks to the textile industry. Gera was one of the centers of the popular uprising on June 17, 1953, which was crushed by the declaration of a state of emergency with the use of Soviet tanks. This name probably came into being before the Migration Period and was adopted by the Slavs who had lived there since the 8th century. The theater stages of the city of Gera merged with the Landestheater Altenburg in 1996 to form the Theater Altenburg-Gera. The Metropol-Kino reopened as a program cinema in November 2014.
