In 1948 the Princely Brewery was nationalized. The original section of the Elstertal, in which the city is located today, was called Gera. This name probably came into being before the Migration Period and was adopted by the Slavs who had lived there since the 8th century. The textile industry had gained importance in Gera since the 15th century.
