Since 1564, Gera had been the residence of the younger Reuss line. The cabaret “Fat nappies” directly under the town hall is well-known beyond the city limits. Gera was largely destroyed by fire in 1686 and 1780. A settlement of the same name arose in the center of the Gera region in the 12th century. This received city rights in the early 13th century (before 1237). During the Second World War, from May 1944 to April 1945, Gera experienced a total of ten air raids by the American Air Force.
