The city name Gera is the designation of the original section of the Elstertal, where the city is located today. Due to the uranium ore mining near Ronneburg, Gera became a big city in the GDR era and in 1989 reached about 135,000 people, the highest number of inhabitants in its history. The Gera theater venues are the Big House, the Stage at the Park, the Small Theater in the Center and the TheaterFABRIK Gera. The town has been called Bad Köstritz since 1926. It is assumed that the name Gera originated before the Migration Period. Slavs had lived there since the 8th century and had retained the name.
