The original section of the Elstertal, in which the city is located today, was called Gera. Since April 1945, Gera, like the rest of Thuringia, was occupied by the US Army and from July 2, 1945 by the Soviets. The city became part of the GDR in 1949. In 1952 Gera became the district capital. The name of the city of Gera originally referred to the section of the Elstertal where the city is located today. Gera 1450 was almost completely destroyed in the Saxon Civil War. In 1882, Oscar Tietz founded the shop with the money from his rich uncle Hermann Tietz, which over the years would develop into one of the most successful department store chains - Hertie.
