The theater stages of the city of Gera merged with the Landestheater Altenburg in 1996 to form the Theater Altenburg-Gera. In 1927, the Thuringian Ministry officially granted Bad Köstritz its town charter. Gera was one of the centers of the popular uprising on June 17, 1953, which was crushed by the declaration of a state of emergency with the use of Soviet tanks. In the early days, Gera developed into one of the richest cities in Germany thanks to the textile industry. It is assumed that the name Gera originated before the Migration Period. Slavs had lived there since the 8th century and had retained the name.
