Gera was one of the centers of the popular uprising on June 17, 1953, which was crushed by the declaration of a state of emergency with the use of Soviet tanks. A castle probably existed on the Kirchberg since the middle of the 13th century. The Slavic settlement Köstritz was first mentioned in a seizure document from 1364 as Kostricz.
