It is assumed that the name Gera originated before the Migration Period. Slavs had lived there since the 8th century and had retained the name. The town has been called Bad Köstritz since 1926. This name probably came into being before the Migration Period and was adopted by the Slavs who had lived there since the 8th century. A settlement of the same name arose in the center of the Gera region in the 12th century. This received city rights in the early 13th century (before 1237).
