The Slavic settlement Köstritz was first mentioned in a seizure document from 1364 as Kostricz. Since April 1945, Gera, like the rest of Thuringia, was occupied by the US Army and from July 2, 1945 by the Soviets. The city became part of the GDR in 1949. In 1952 Gera became the district capital. Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz, a Slavic settlement, on a deed of attachment in 1364. In 1882, Oscar Tietz founded the shop with the money from his rich uncle Hermann Tietz, which over the years would develop into one of the most successful department store chains - Hertie. Gara originally referred to the section of the Elster valley in which the city is located today.
