Köstritz belonged to the Margraviate of Meissen and came to the Reussen in 1364. Gera was one of the centers of the popular uprising on June 17, 1953, which was crushed by the declaration of a state of emergency with the use of Soviet tanks. The town has been called Bad Köstritz since 1926. The name probably originated before the Migration Period and was taken over by the Slavs who had lived there since the 8th century. The theater stages of the city of Gera merged with the Landestheater Altenburg in 1996 to form the Theater Altenburg-Gera.
