The original section of the Elstertal, in which the city is located today, was called Gera. The name probably originated before the Migration Period and was taken over by the Slavs who had lived there since the 8th century. Since April 1945, Gera, like the rest of Thuringia, was occupied by the US Army and from July 2, 1945 by the Soviets. The city became part of the GDR in 1949. In 1952 Gera became the district capital. The Slavic settlement Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz on a seizure document in 1364. It is assumed that the name Gera originated before the Migration Period. Slavs had lived there since the 8th century and had retained the name.
