Since April 1945, Gera, like the rest of Thuringia, was occupied by the US Army and from July 2, 1945 by the Soviets. The city became part of the GDR in 1949. In 1952 Gera became the district capital. A castle probably existed on the Kirchberg since the middle of the 13th century. The Metropol-Kino reopened as a program cinema in November 2014.
