The name probably originated before the Migration Period and was taken over by the Slavs who had lived there since the 8th century. Since April 1945, Gera, like the rest of Thuringia, was occupied by the US Army and from July 2, 1945 by the Soviets. The city became part of the GDR in 1949. In 1952 Gera became the district capital. A settlement of the same name arose in the center of the Gera region in the 12th century. This received city rights in the early 13th century (before 1237).
