The theater stages of the city of Gera merged with the Landestheater Altenburg in 1996 to form the Theater Altenburg-Gera. The Slavic settlement Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz on a deed of attachment from 1364. The importance of the city continued to increase under the sovereign Heinrich Posthumus Reuss. In 1948 the Princely Brewery was nationalized. Due to the uranium ore mining near Ronneburg, Gera became a big city in the GDR era and in 1989 reached about 135,000 people, the highest number of inhabitants in its history.
