The name of the city of Gera originally referred to the section of the Elstertal where the city is located today. It is assumed that the name Gera originated before the Migration Period. Slavs had lived there since the 8th century and had retained the name. Since 1564, Gera had been the residence of the younger Reuss line. From 1804 the castle park in the Elster-Aue was designed in the style of an English landscape garden. The commercial serving of beer from the Princely Reuss brewery in the lower tavern (today: Goldener Löwe) has been permitted since 1543.
