The importance of the city continued to increase under the sovereign Heinrich Posthumus Reuss. The town has been called Bad Köstritz since 1926. Since April 1945, Gera, like the rest of Thuringia, was occupied by the US Army and from July 2, 1945 by the Soviets. The city became part of the GDR in 1949. In 1952 Gera became the district capital. It is assumed that the name Gera originated before the Migration Period. Slavs had lived there since the 8th century and had retained the name.
