Since April 1945, Gera, like the rest of Thuringia, was occupied by the US Army and from July 2, 1945 by the Soviets. The city became part of the GDR in 1949. In 1952 Gera became the district capital. The name probably originated before the Migration Period and was taken over by the Slavs who had lived there since the 8th century. Gera was one of the centers of the popular uprising on June 17, 1953, which was crushed by the declaration of a state of emergency with the use of Soviet tanks. The Gera theater venues are the Big House, the Stage at the Park, the Small Theater in the Center and the TheaterFABRIK Gera. The Metropol-Kino reopened as a program cinema in November 2014.
