The commercial serving of beer from the Princely Reuss brewery in the lower tavern (today: Goldener Löwe) has been permitted since 1543. Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz, a Slavic settlement, on a deed of attachment in 1364. The textile industry had gained importance in Gera since the 15th century.
