The Slavic settlement Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz on a deed of attachment from 1364. In 1927, the Thuringian Ministry officially granted Bad Köstritz its town charter. The textile industry had gained importance in Gera since the 15th century. The name probably originated before the Migration Period and was taken over by the Slavs who had lived there since the 8th century. From 1804 the castle park in the Elster-Aue was designed in the style of an English landscape garden.
