During the Second World War, from May 1944 to April 1945, Gera experienced a total of ten air raids by the American Air Force. A settlement of the same name arose in the center of the Gera region in the 12th century. This received city rights in the early 13th century (before 1237). In 1845 Adolf Sturm set up a bathing establishment. This was significantly expanded in 1865 with the construction of a new spa building and conversion into a public limited company. Gera 1450 was almost completely destroyed in the Saxon Civil War. Gara originally referred to the section of the Elster valley in which the city is located today.
