The original section of the Elstertal, in which the city is located today, was called Gera. The Slavic settlement Köstritz was first mentioned in a seizure document from 1364 as Kostricz. The name Gera probably came into being before the Migration Period. The Slavs, who had been resident since the 8th century, had retained this. In 1882, Oscar Tietz founded the shop with the money from his rich uncle Hermann Tietz, which over the years would develop into one of the most successful department store chains - Hertie. The commercial serving of beer from the Princely Reuss brewery in the lower tavern (today: Goldener Löwe) has been permitted since 1543.
