Due to the uranium ore mining near Ronneburg, Gera became a big city in the GDR era and in 1989 reached about 135,000 people, the highest number of inhabitants in its history. Since April 1945, Gera, like the rest of Thuringia, was occupied by the US Army and from July 2, 1945 by the Soviets. The city became part of the GDR in 1949. In 1952 Gera became the district capital. This name probably came into being before the Migration Period and was adopted by the Slavs who had lived there since the 8th century.
