The theater stages of the city of Gera merged with the Landestheater Altenburg in 1996 to form the Theater Altenburg-Gera. The Slavic settlement Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz on a seizure document in 1364. Since April 1945, Gera, like the rest of Thuringia, was occupied by the US Army and from July 2, 1945 by the Soviets. The city became part of the GDR in 1949. In 1952 Gera became the district capital. In 1845 Adolf Sturm set up a bathing establishment. This was significantly expanded in 1865 with the construction of a new spa building and conversion into a public limited company. In 1948 the Princely Brewery was nationalized.
