The theater stages of the city of Gera merged with the Landestheater Altenburg in 1996 to form the Theater Altenburg-Gera. Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz, a Slavic settlement, on a deed of attachment in 1364. A settlement of the same name arose in the center of the Gera region in the 12th century. This received city rights in the early 13th century (before 1237). The town has been called Bad Köstritz since 1926. The name probably originated before the Migration Period and was taken over by the Slavs who had lived there since the 8th century.
