In 1927, the Thuringian Ministry officially granted Bad Köstritz its town charter. Köstritz belonged to the Margraviate of Meissen and came to the Reussen in 1364. Gera was largely destroyed by fire in 1686 and 1780. Due to the uranium ore mining near Ronneburg, Gera became a big city in the GDR era and in 1989 reached about 135,000 people, the highest number of inhabitants in its history. The name Gera probably came into being before the Migration Period. The Slavs, who had been resident since the 8th century, had retained this.
