It is assumed that the name Gera originated before the Migration Period. Slavs had lived there since the 8th century and had retained the name. A settlement of the same name arose in the center of the Gera region in the 12th century. This received city rights in the early 13th century (before 1237). Gera 1450 was almost completely destroyed in the Saxon Civil War. A castle probably existed on the Kirchberg since the middle of the 13th century.
