A settlement of the same name arose in the center of the Gera region in the 12th century. This received city rights in the early 13th century (before 1237). The Slavic settlement Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz on a seizure document in 1364. In 1948 the Princely Brewery was nationalized. The name probably originated before the Migration Period and was taken over by the Slavs who had lived there since the 8th century. In 1882, Oscar Tietz founded the shop with the money from his rich uncle Hermann Tietz, which over the years would develop into one of the most successful department store chains - Hertie.
