In 1882, Oscar Tietz founded the shop with the money from his rich uncle Hermann Tietz, which over the years would develop into one of the most successful department store chains - Hertie. A castle probably existed on the Kirchberg since the middle of the 13th century. The Slavic settlement Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz on a deed of attachment from 1364. This name probably came into being before the Migration Period and was adopted by the Slavs who had lived there since the 8th century. Since 1564, Gera had been the residence of the younger Reuss line.
