The town has been called Bad Köstritz since 1926. It is assumed that the name Gera originated before the Migration Period. Slavs had lived there since the 8th century and had retained the name. Since April 1945, Gera, like the rest of Thuringia, was occupied by the US Army and from July 2, 1945 by the Soviets. The city became part of the GDR in 1949. In 1952 Gera became the district capital. Since 1564, Gera had been the residence of the younger Reuss line. The theater stages of the city of Gera merged with the Landestheater Altenburg in 1996 to form the Theater Altenburg-Gera.
