Gera 1450 was almost completely destroyed in the Saxon Civil War. The Slavic settlement Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz on a deed of attachment from 1364. Gera was largely destroyed by fire in 1686 and 1780. The name probably originated before the Migration Period and was taken over by the Slavs who had lived there since the 8th century.
