The town has been called Bad Köstritz since 1926. The Slavic settlement Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz on a deed of attachment from 1364. The name of the city of Gera originally referred to the section of the Elstertal where the city is located today. During the Second World War, from May 1944 to April 1945, Gera experienced a total of ten air raids by the American Air Force. Since April 1945, Gera, like the rest of Thuringia, was occupied by the US Army and from July 2, 1945 by the Soviets. The city became part of the GDR in 1949. In 1952 Gera became the district capital.
