The importance of the city continued to increase under the sovereign Heinrich Posthumus Reuss. Since 1564, Gera had been the residence of the younger Reuss line. It is assumed that the name Gera originated before the Migration Period. Slavs had lived there since the 8th century and had retained the name. Gera 1450 was almost completely destroyed in the Saxon Civil War. Gera was one of the centers of the popular uprising on June 17, 1953, which was crushed by the declaration of a state of emergency with the use of Soviet tanks.
