Due to the uranium ore mining near Ronneburg, Gera became a big city in the GDR era and in 1989 reached about 135,000 people, the highest number of inhabitants in its history. The cabaret “Fat nappies” directly under the town hall is well-known beyond the city limits. A settlement of the same name arose in the center of the Gera region in the 12th century. This received city rights in the early 13th century (before 1237). From 1804 the castle park in the Elster-Aue was designed in the style of an English landscape garden. The importance of the city continued to increase under the sovereign Heinrich Posthumus Reuss.
