The Slavic settlement Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz on a deed of attachment from 1364. The textile industry had gained importance in Gera since the 15th century. This name probably came into being before the Migration Period and was adopted by the Slavs who had lived there since the 8th century. Gera was one of the centers of the popular uprising on June 17, 1953, which was crushed by the declaration of a state of emergency with the use of Soviet tanks.
